Matera is very famous for its extensive cave-dwelling districts, the sassi, where you can also find Rupsterian churches carved from the rocks.<\/p>\n

It is thought to be the third-longest continuously inhabited human settlement in the world.<\/p>\n

On the top of the hill, Civitas hill, there\u2019s the Cathedral which offers an amazing view of the \u201cSasso Barisano\u201d.<\/p>\n

A few kilometers from Matera, along the wall of the Gravina di Picciano you can find the Crypt of the Original Sin. It\u2019s a frescoed church-cave (re) brought to light in 1963, and it\u2019s called the Sistine Chapel of rupestrian wall painting.<\/p>\n

For our groups, we organize a walking tour with a specialized local guide that tells the stories that make history alive, since the area has been occupied by various civilizations over thousands of years. Many tales are to be told.<\/p>\n

The area is becoming one of the most popular destinations for alternative tourism and high-end boutique hotels have been built in antique caves that charm the most sophisticated traveller. Local gastronomy is incredible and a lunch in a typical cave restaurant for a group is always the highlight of the day.<\/p>\n
